Learning Beyond Academics

Physical Education and Sports

Maria Montessori saw children as beings in constant motion. She was interested in directing that energy in various ways. She was also interested in the overall health of the child, as well as seeing the development of motor skills as a source of self-esteem. Our PE program includes cooperative games, dance, perceptual motor skills (ball handling, use of ropes, balancing, tumbling, juggling, parachute play), exercise, and some competitive games. About 25 minutes a day are reserved for such activities. Aikido has been a part of our Physical Education program for many years. The instructor is provided by New School Aikido.

Health and Nutrition Specialty classes

All lower elementary students have a series of nutrition classes in which they learn about food groups and nutrition and how they can affect health. 5th and 6th year students participate in a Human Growth class. This class addresses topics such as friendship, decision-making, family values, gender roles and stereotypes, puberty, reproduction and parenthood.

Art

Art is interwoven throughout all the subjects. Through art activities we extend the children’s creative development and general knowledge. The children have a weekly art class and participate in a large variety of creative experiences, e.g. making models, fish prints, clay modeling, textiles, color theory, etc. Many of the techniques and art lessons focus on the art of the people of the continent we are studying in that particular
year.

Music

Maria Montessori saw music as important to the development of the senses, especially the auditory discriminatory capacities. We are happy to be able to offer the wonderful Off-Schulwerk program. Children learn music through dance and movement, Off instruments, recorders, rhythm, playing ensemble and singing. They are encouraged to improvise, create and perform.
